Why Nitrogen, Not Compressed Air
Compressed air contains moisture and oxygen. Moisture contaminates refrigerant oil and causes acid formation; oxygen creates oxidation inside copper pipework and on valve seats. Nitrogen is inert and dry — it won't react with system components or leave contamination behind. Always use OFN (oxygen-free nitrogen) for HVAC pressure testing. Never use compressed air.
Why Regulation Matters
Applying unregulated cylinder pressure directly to a system is dangerous and will damage components. Nitrogen cylinders can hold 200+ bar. Most HVAC systems are rated to 40–45 bar on the high side — TXVs, pressure transducers, and thin-walled evaporator coils are all vulnerable to over-pressurisation. Always check the manufacturer's maximum allowable pressure (MAP) before testing — don't assume. Test high and low sides separately where the system design allows.
Pressure Test Procedure
- Confirm system is fully recovered and isolated
- Connect nitrogen cylinder via regulator to the system service ports
- Pressurise incrementally — don't go straight to test pressure
- Check for audible leaks at each increment
- Hold at test pressure for the required duration
- Monitor for pressure decay — any drop indicates a leak
- Use electronic detector or bubble solution to locate the leak source
- Depressurise fully before any repair work
Pressure Decay vs Temperature
Nitrogen pressure changes with temperature — roughly 0.5 bar per 10°C. If ambient temperature drops during a long hold test, you'll see pressure drop that isn't a leak. Record ambient temperature at start and end of the test and apply a correction if needed. A sudden pressure drop is a leak; a gradual drift tracking temperature change is not.
Documentation
Record initial pressure, hold duration, final pressure, ambient temperature at start and end, and any corrective actions. This is your evidence of system integrity before charging — essential for warranty protection and F-Gas compliance records.
