Correct pipework selection is critical to system performance, efficiency, and longevity. Undersized pipe increases refrigerant velocity and pressure drop; uninsulated pipe causes condensation, energy loss, and potential water damage. Pipework sizing guide
AC copper pipe uses imperial OD sizing (outside diameter) — this is different from plumbing copper pipe which uses metric OD. Always specify pipe by OD when ordering for refrigeration and air conditioning work. Common sizes:
- 1/4" OD — liquid line on small split systems
- 3/8" OD — suction line on small split systems; liquid line on larger systems
- 1/2" OD — suction line on medium split systems
- 5/8" OD — suction line on larger domestic and light commercial systems
- 3/4" and 7/8" OD — commercial and multi-split applications
