When Do You Need a Condensate Pump?
Air conditioning units and dehumidifiers produce condensate continuously during operation. Where gravity drainage to a suitable outlet is possible, a pump isn't needed. A pump is required when the drain outlet is above the unit, when there's no nearby drain, or when the condensate needs to be lifted to reach a suitable discharge point — common in ceiling cassette and concealed duct installations.
Key Selection Criteria
Lift Height
The most important spec. Measure the vertical distance from the pump to the discharge point and add a margin — pumps lose performance as lift increases. Most mini pumps handle up to 5m; high-lift models go to 10m+. Always check the pump's performance curve, not just the headline figure.
Flow Rate
Match to the condensate output of the unit. A rough guide: 0.1 litres/hour per kW of cooling capacity under standard conditions, higher in humid environments. For multiple units draining to one pump, add the outputs and apply a 1.5× safety factor.
Reservoir Size
Larger reservoir = less frequent cycling = longer motor life. But oversized reservoirs allow condensate to sit and promote bacterial growth. Aim for 3–5 minute cycling intervals under normal load.
Noise Level
Critical for bedroom and office installations. Several brands offer silent or whisper-quiet variants specifically for noise-sensitive environments.

Installation Tips
Position — mount as close to the unit as practical. Keep the inlet pipe short and sloped to drain fully. Avoid traps in the inlet line — they cause airlocks.
Discharge pipe — use the smallest bore pipe that meets the pump's spec. Keep bends to a minimum. Terminate at a suitable drain — not into a soil stack without a trap.
Alarm connection — always wire the overflow alarm to the unit's control board where possible. If the pump fails, the unit shuts down rather than flooding the ceiling.
Maintenance
Clean the reservoir every 6–12 months — algae and slime block the float mechanism. Use a condensate treatment tablet to slow biological growth. Check the discharge line is clear on every service visit.
