Safety Classification: A2L — What Changes for Installers
R-32 is classified A2L — low toxicity, mildly flammable. This is a meaningful change from R-410A (A1 — non-flammable) and has practical implications:
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation when working in enclosed plant rooms or ceiling voids
- Ignition sources: No naked flames, sparks, or hot work in the immediate vicinity during handling
- Leak detection: Electronic detectors must be A2L-rated — standard R-410A detectors may not respond correctly to R-32
- Storage: Store cylinders away from heat sources; follow COSHH requirements
- Signage: Some commercial installations require A2L refrigerant warning signage — check building regulations
