What Is R-32 and Why Is It Replacing R-410A?

R-32 (difluoromethane) is a single-component HFC refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675 — roughly one third of R-410A's GWP of 2,088. As the EU F-gas phase-down tightens HFC quotas, manufacturers have moved rapidly to R-32 as the primary refrigerant for new residential and light commercial split systems.

UK Regulatory Position Post-Brexit

The UK operates its own F-gas framework, mirroring the EU phase-down trajectory but administered independently. Key points for UK installers:

  • The UK HFC quota system continues to tighten through 2030
  • R-410A remains available but is subject to increasing supply restrictions and price pressure
  • New equipment approvals are increasingly R-32 only — check manufacturer datasheets before ordering replacement parts
  • All handling, recovery, and record-keeping obligations remain unchanged regardless of refrigerant type

Safety Classification: A2L — What Changes for Installers

R-32 is classified A2L — low toxicity, mildly flammable. This is a meaningful change from R-410A (A1 — non-flammable) and has practical implications:

  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation when working in enclosed plant rooms or ceiling voids
  • Ignition sources: No naked flames, sparks, or hot work in the immediate vicinity during handling
  • Leak detection: Electronic detectors must be A2L-rated — standard R-410A detectors may not respond correctly to R-32
  • Storage: Store cylinders away from heat sources; follow COSHH requirements
  • Signage: Some commercial installations require A2L refrigerant warning signage — check building regulations

Tool & Equipment Requirements

Not all existing HVAC tooling is rated for A2L refrigerants. Before working on R-32 systems, verify:
